STIWDIO UN residential recording and rehearsal music studio is a traditional recording service catering for all your audio related needs using a wide range of modern and vintage technology.

We will consider recording anything but welcome solo artists, bands, big bands, choirs, orchestras and voice-overs (including telephone voiceover prompts and messages).

Our sound proof multi-acoustic live room (with dead, neutral, live areas and vocal booth) means you can record or rehearse any time of the day or night and achieve any sound you could possibly want.

Our control room is a purpose built listening environment (no need to check mixes on multiple systems like your car... (What you hear is how it sounds!) equipped with both digital and analogue recording and mixing equipment accompanied by a huge array of effects, outboard, microphones, synthesisers and instruments.

We can offer you help and advice at any stage of your production from concept to broadcast/release and from on location to the studio. We also offer home recording artists remixing and mastering services.

If you’re not fortunate enough to live in Wales, why not stay here in our bunkhouse!

Accommodation

We’re based in Rachub; near Bethesda- a small village in North Wales on the mountain side of Moel Faban at the mouth of the famous Ogwen Valley (Penrhyn Slate Quarry and Zip World just a stone’s throw away)... photos of The Ogwen on Flickr.

Our accommodation includes a 4-bed bunkhouse with a single and double sofa bed sleeping 4-6 sharing with self-catering amenities, Sky TV, Hi-Fi and Wi-Fi.

There is a patio with gas bbq and large slate table. Guests have access to a private bar with pool table, large eight-seat sofa and 68” HD cinema screen (Xbox and PlayStation) perfect for relaxing in-between takes or at the end of a long day recording.

We also have a 6 person 130 jet Canadian spa/hot tub and a heated swimming pool. We can offer half and full board options serving hearty Welsh breakfasts and sumptuous home cooked food in a relaxed homely atmosphere.

Gear

Digidesign Pro Tools is the preferred recording platform at Stiwdio Un. Other platforms available include Logic Pro X, Abelton Live 9, Reason 8, Studio One 3, Reaper, Sibelius and Cubase SX.

The main mixing console is an analogue Mackie 24:8:2. We have a huge amount of both modern and vintage outboard including some great valve gear.

There is also a beautiful collection of different amplifiers and instruments so as to not miss any new tonal opportunities.

All this is complimented by more than 40 different models of microphone to choose from including many classic pairs. If you are more of an audiophile you may want to record on one of our many tape machines for that truly authentic analogue sound.

Sam Durrant

Welcome to the STIWDIO UN website.

My name is Sam Durrant, and I’m the owner of STIWDIO UN (Welsh for STUDIO ONE).

I've been recording sound and producing music for 27 years. My background stems from classical music such as recording solo material, soundtrack scores and various ensembles.

I have worked extensively with concert PA systems on the festival circuit in the 90’s and subsequently on the Welsh music scene.

This led to me building a previous recording studio in Waunfawr near Caernarfon, North Wales, which is now Gwynfryn , a community based recording studio.

I have recorded most genres of music including choirs and brass bands through to rock and pop bands with everything in-between (Afro beat, hip-hop, opera, folk, Death Metal, jazz and world music) and of course voiceovers and radio plays.

I regard myself primarily as an engineer/producer although I am qualified in electronics and computer programming and I play music, but only for pleasure.

I have truly eclectic taste in music with over 6000 albums on vinyl and several thousand on cd and I enjoy helping people achieve any sound they can describe in the studio.
